Mermaid Tail by jadestonethedragon Mermaid Tail by jadestonethedragon
This summer/semester I made a swimable mermaid tail out of miliskin, fabric paint, and a Finnis Wave monofin that I modified. It's a lot of fun, and I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Oh wow I thought this was a silicone tail! Very very nice fabric tail. Now this really makes me want to make my own fabric tail. I knew there had to be some example out there of a nice fabric tail that wasn't just solid fabric. :)

Amazing tail, I'm thinking about making one myself. (Once I get the money.) Any advice?

You look very happy, and given your sea-tailoring skills, you should be!  I hope you swim safely and happily in your beautiful creation.

Thanks! I pinned netting to it to create the diamond pattern, and then hand painted each scale in place with Jacquard Lumiere fabric paints, which I mixed to get the colors I wanted :)

How did you modify the finis wave? I have a rapid but it creates ridges in my fluke :s does yours do the same? Thanks

sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you--there are some ridges in the middle, but the paint stiffened the fabric a bit so they're not too obvious. I also trimmed some of the ridges on the edges of the fin so I could extend it, but be warned that this decreases the stiffness/thrust of the fin and cuts down on propulsion while swimming.

beautiful tail, looks very professional-i love orange mermaid tails, they seem more rare than the green and blue colored ones.

Thank you so much!

And yeah, while I actually like blue/green better as colors on their own, I think the orange/red/gold tones work better for me in a tail (: It provides a nice bright contrast with typically blue/green or darker water.

Well, the tail looks pretty "mermaidy" anyway, though its bright color could attract sharks.

I'll certainly have to be careful if I ever swim with it in the ocean! Especially since it makes me look more like a seal, too.

Reply
:iconjadestonethedragon:
jadestonethedragon Featured By Owner Oct 28, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
Thanks!! Milliskin is basically the same as spandex, but a little bit thicker/stronger. It's commonly used in dance leotards/tights, but is basically identical to swimsuit fabric :)
